CEO, but not Chairman of the Board!

Hey there! it’s me, Emily. I thought it'd be fun to write about the fun and funny stuff that happens to me. To bring you up to speed, I am a businesswoman and I am 12 years old! No, really. I really am!

I am also in the 7th grade at Laguna Middle School in San Luis Obispo and I am an acrobatic gymnast and I train at Central Coast Gymnastics.

Back to the businesswoman part! I started this business when I was 10. It wasn’t my plan, but my 5th grade project kinda grew wings. My grandma had recently lost her battle with pancreatic cancer (after she had breast cancer and leukemia) and I know a lot of people who have been affected by this yucky disease, so I wanted to do something about it!

So, with the help of my dad, who’s really creative and my mom, who knows about public relations stuff, and a really good friend who is an artist and a cancer survivor, Kids 4 Kures was created (and yes, I spelled cures wrong and it kinda stuck).

We design and sell greeting cards and raise money to support charities. My original plan was to sell a few boxes of cards to friends and family members so that I could raise a few hundred dollars, and get a good grade on my project. Next thing you know I was talking to attorneys about turning Kids 4 Kures into a nonprofit 501 c 3 organization. For those of you who think my parents called the shots, or did the project for me, think again.

Ask anyone in my family and they’ll tell you, “It’s Emily’s world and we all just live in it.” So, let’s get that straight!

It's been great to learn about business and raise money to support cancer charities.

So, Kids 4 Kures has a Board of Directors - great huh! Too bad I can't be on it. I am the CEO of my company (creative enthusiastic organizer - that was my idea), but can't be on the Board of Directors (or BoD). What's that all about? I know I sound tweaked about it, but It's not that big of a deal, it just is kinda funny to me! So for now, I'm gonna find out about Board of Directors and what they do. More later!

My goal this summer!

Actually, I have a few goals. Three more days until my acro team goes to Orlando, Florida, to compete in the 2010 Acrobatic Gymnastics National Championships. We've been training hard. I didn't even know that I had the muscles that are sore right now! Wish us luck!

My other goal, of course, is to bring more awareness for Kids 4 Kures. I've been busy writing letters to companies, interviewing business people here in San Luis Obispo and contacting community organizations (like Rotary, Chamber of Commerce and Lyon's Clubs) to ask for speaking opportunities at their meetings.

I'll keep updating my progress on my blog. Stay tuned for interviews of Peaches Olson and Reese Davies.

Thanks Mimi Phene-McKellar!

Mimi’s the owner of Central Coast Gymnastics (where I’m an acro gymnast). She’s a member of Executive Networking in San Luis Obispo, and recently she talked about Kids 4 Kures at one of her meetings. She sold a bunch of boxes of cards too. You are awesome Mimi! And thanks to the people at Executive Networking for supporting K4K!

Summertime. Lots to do. Let’s see!

Train for 2010 Acrobatic Gymnastics National Championships. Sixteen more days and counting. GO CCG!

Write letters to businesses to tell them about Kids 4 Kures. Please write me back Doug Parker, Joe Shoen and Warren Buffett! I really want your advice!

Make a few gift baskets for upcoming silent auctions to support local cancer charities!

Hang out with my friends. They are awesome!

Orlando, Florida, here we come!

My acrobatic gymnastics team qualified for the 2010 Acrobatic Gymnastics National Championships, so we’re off to Kissimee, Florida. I hope to be able to speak at a few Rotary meetings about Kids 4 Kures while I’m there. I’ve sent letters to Rotary Clubs in Orlando and hope to hear from them soon. I’ll keep you posted. Wish me luck!

Support Kids 4 Kures

Remember the name Emily Flachman. This young student is destined to make a big change in the world!

Flachman is a student at C.E. Teach Elementary School and the founder of Kids 4 Kures (“Good News!” June 19). She and her school friends recently held a fundraiser at a local restaurant for her nonprofit organization.

Flachman was motivated to start this program as a “community action” project encouraged by the teachers at her school. I have had the pleasure of working with Teach Elementary School for the past 17 years with my company, and I am very impressed that its curriculum includes community involvement.

Many of the students select projects that have made great changes in our community, but Flachman took it one step further and has expanded her mission to a much larger scale.

I encourage everyone to visit Kids 4 Kures at http://kids4kures.org and see how you can help Flachman’s program to support cancer charities.

And remember her name, as I am sure she will become a CEO of some large organization one day!
